IV.2 - Saint Martin de Porres (1962)
“Saint Martin de Porres” is one of Mary Lou Williams’ first sacred composition, written in 1962 after she became a Roman Catholic in 1957. It also marks her return to composing, the beginning of a new era in her career. The piece was released together with its companion-piece “The Devil” on Williams’ first release on her own label, Mary Records.
This edition is based on the vocal scores that were used for the recording session as well as sketches and lyrics sheet, finally making this classic composition available with a precise, corrected score. It also includes an optional double-bass part (not heard on the recording) and diplomatic transcriptions of an earlier state of the piece.
Instrumentation:
choir and piano
with optional double-bass
