A sophisticated reworking of Williams' own 1929 composition, this version of “Mary’s Idea” was written for Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy in 1938. Recorded on December 6 that same year, it had been cut due to time restrictions. Based on the manuscripts, this edition restores the original longer version of the piece.
For big band:
4 reeds (2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor saxophones, incl. 1 alto doubling on baritone, 1 tenor doubling on clarinet)
3 trumpets, 2 trombones (plus optional bass trombone) guitar, piano, bass, drums
